THE HYPOTHESIS

This Closed Loop project had its beginnings in the 1960's at UC Santa Cruz, as a study of "mandala" and other related holistic spiritual symbolism. The original vision emerged as thesis for an undergraduate class on Pre Socratic philosophy, and the subject of the thesis was "The Opposites". In those days, the symbolism of mandala was everywhere, and it seemed that half of the books in Bookshop Santa Cruz had a mandala on the cover. What emerged one night as a sudden flash of inspiration was a idea of hierarchy organized as a circle, with a center and an outer boundary, like many of the mandalas in popular view at the time.
